The Aftercare Program is for the women who have left our program but continue to need support as they transition into their new life. It offers collaborative support and programming to past residents to assist them toward consistent stability and sustainable independence. This is accomplished through mentorship, coaching, advocacy, and education. Terebinth Refuge Aftercare seeks to build on the past resident’s strengths and skills, turning Survivors into Survivor Leaders.
As a woman prepares to leave Terebinth Refuge she is informed of our Aftercare Program. She is given an “Aftercare business card” which indicates the number to call for Aftercare services, and the hours to call, and is encouraged to leave a message during off hours so that an Aftercare advocate can return her call on the next business day.
Past residents can call and check in with an Aftercare advocate. The advocate and woman may decide to visit via cell phone or meet in person.
The woman may express an in-kind need such as food, diapers, or transportation needs. The Advocate will need to weigh the need carefully and first encourage community resources such as the food shelf. Our goal is to foster independence, planning, and budgeting skills. We do know that sometimes circumstances can happen as women are working to be independent.
Sometimes a woman may just need a direction to turn for additional resources such as budgeting classes, legal aid connects, or a “how to find” something. An advocate or our Case Manager can assist in locating the needed resources.
Aftercare advocates will facilitate gatherings of past residents for encouragement, educational topics, and mentoring. These groups might meet at various times.
